Custom Template Components
A variety of template components such as roadways, ditches, curb and gutter attachments, sidewalks and retaining walls are available on the installation CD or from the Softree web site (via the e-Library function).  These stock template components contain logical rules to determine how they will be rendered (how they will appear) in different design situations.   This library of stock template components covers many typical design situations, however it is sometimes necessary to create custom components for a specific project.
Creating custom components is similar to computer programming.  The programmer must define the properties of the component at a very detailed level. Once this has been done, the component must be carefully tested to ensure the geometry and volumes are correct. If the custom component is useful, it can be “packaged” into a stock component so that others users can apply it easily without getting into the “gory details” The user of a component can apply the component by simply enter the value of a parameter such as depth of pavement or width of shoulder.
Templates are built on a hierarchy of sub-objects; components, legs and fragments as shown below.
Most users only access the Template and Component  sub-objects (the Fragments and Legs are hidden from view). This  simplifies the user interface.  When a component has it’s legs and fragments hidden it is said to be a Stock Component.  When a component has is legs and fragments visible it is said to be Customizable.
To create Template Objects the programmer must define the Fragments and Legs which make up the object.
