Reference Terrains dialog
Note:  This dialog is available by clicking on the Terrains button  from the Alignment tab in  the Location Setup dialog.
This dialog box allows you to define Reference Terrain files. The list box at the top of the dialog box contains a set of predefined reference terrain placeholders e.g.  Topo SurfaceSub-surface 1, Reference terrain 1 etc.
Topo Surface
This Reference Terrain is used to represent the original ground and must contain TIN surface model. Note that this surface is optional if a P-Line traverse with cross section side shots is defined.
Sub-surface and Reference terrains
These Reference Terrains can be used in any of the following ways:
1) The surface (TIN) contained in the Reference Terrain can be used as a sub-horizon (an interface between different ground types) underneath the main surface (Topo). See the Ground Layers dialog box accessed from the Sub Horizons Assignments dialog by pressing the plus (+) button next to Ground Layers.
2) Features contained in the Reference Terrain can be displayed in the Profile and Section windows. They can also be used to control the behaviour of template components (see the Reference Features dialog).
3) Reference Terrains can be displayed in the background of the Plan window (see the Background Display Files dialog available in the Plan Window Options.)

To create a new Reference Terrain
1) Select an available position (e.g. Sub Surface 1) in the list box.
2) Browse or type the Terrain file name. The list item will then show as checked.
3) Enter the description (optional) and choose the appropriate check boxes (see below).

Locked to the design (checkbox)
If this item is checked, the referenced file will be moved with the design during a File-Save As operation. A locked terrain file must be in the same folder as the Location design. The Topo Surface is always locked if it exists.
Displayed in Plan (checkbox)
If this item is checked, the referenced file will shown in the background of the Plan window. (See the Background Display Files dialog available in the Plan Window Options).
Remove
Press this button to remove an existing Reference Terrain.
Include in cross section as a template surface (e.g. As-built).
If selected, the cross section will be automatically included as a template surface.  This option is only available for Reference Surfaces (not Topo or Sub-surfaces).
Layer
If Include in Cross Section is selected, this combo box will be available to choose the template layer into which to include the volumes etc .
