The Network License Manager (NLM) is a standalone application that runs on a server (or designated host computer). It activates licenses, and requires internet access at all times.
Roadeng desktop applications connect to the NLM to sign out licenses, and disconnect to release them.
The RoadEng desktop application should not be installed on the same computer that hosts the NLM.
There are different versions of the NLM for each of Roadeng 8 and Roadeng 9 (and subsequent future versions of Roadeng). You should not install NLM 8 and NLM 9 on the same computer.
Activation Issues
Connectivity/Discovery Issues
Under normal circumstances, the NLM, and all the Roadeng desktop apps that use it, must co-exist on the same local network. When the roadeng desktop app scans to search for a NLM, it only scans the local network, on the same subnet. If the NLM is on a different subnet, roadeng will not find it using the scan function.
For users that are working remotely, and using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access the company's internal resources, this is the same as the preceeding scenario where the roadeng client and the NLM are on different subnets within the same local network.
Troubleshooting Encryption
All versions of roadeng 8 (or later) use encryption to protect sensitive information.
Starting with Network License Manager v1.0.7738.17063 (and later) and Roadeng 9.0.426 (and later), Softree added an alternate encryption method for customers whose computer adhere to the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS). Softree does not recommnd migrating encryption methods unless your computing environment is FIPS compliant. If you need to migrate, contact softree support for assistance.
When Roadeng tries to activate a cloud license, but FIPS is enabled on the users computer, Roadeng may successfully activate, but fail to save the results to file. This may be reported as "No internet Connection" even when the user has internet access. The message is misleading but actually indicates a failure to save.
If Roadeng successfully activates a cloud license or a trial license, when the program exits and restarts at a later time, it should automatically resume without prompting you to re-enter your activation code. If this happens this is likely because of an encryption error. Your computer may be configured for FIPS and if so you will need to migrate encryption modes on RoadEng. You can verify whether or not your computer if FIPS enabled by searching your registry. To do this,
Press yor Windows Start, type regedit and press Enter.
On the Regedit Menu select Edit, then Find..., andd type FipsAlgorithmPolicy, click the CheckBox labelled Match whole string only, and press the Find Next button.
If the Enabled property on this registry key is set to 1, then your computer is FIPS enabled.
If Roadeng attempts to connect to the NLM, and you see an error that says "Unknown Error: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.". This indicates your computer is configured for FIPS and need to migrate encryption methods, both on your Roadeng desktop and on the NLM.
If Roadeng tries to connect to the NLM and Roadeng reports either:
a timeout error
service channel in a faulted state
inferno decryption failure
this likely indicates that RoadEng and thee NLM are using different encyption settings. Both the NLM, and all Roadeng desktop applications that connect to it, need to use the same encryption setting.
